The Bicycle Man:

The largest selection of Recumbents in NYS!

The Bicycle Man has the largest selection of recumbents in New York State. Visit us and test-ride recumbents from: BikeE, RANS, Vision, ReBike & TREK, all in one stop! We have been selling (and riding!) recumbents since '95. We typically have 10 to 20 recumbent bikes in stock, representing 5 to 10 different . We think that ideally you should ride several bikes before you decide on one for your own. Try more than one type, from more than one company. We encourage test rides of 10 miles or so, if you want to. We try to have SWB, CLWB, LWB, ASS & USS, suspended and rigid bikes in stock. In fact, I believe we have the largest selection of in stock recumbents in New York State. We have been building our recumbent business since '95, making us one of the oldest recumbent dealers in NY too. We have personally ridden thousands of miles on recumbents. Customers often drive over 100 miles to test ride our "bents." We enjoy selling people the right recumbent and have therefore committed thousands of dollars to inventory. You can test ride a good variety here before making your decision.
REASONS TO RIDE A RECUMBENT:
Comfort Let's be honest, even if (though?) they are faster than "wedgies" and give a better view, we mainly ride them for comfort. That is why I think you should pay particular attention to the seat on a recumbent. A recumbent seat is a large part of the bike. Sure, any recumbent seat is more comfortable than a wedgie, but which one is best for you? Does its padding work for you, does it support your back well? The best way to find out is a long test ride. The comfort of a recumbent is not all in the seat though. I didn't buy my first recumbent for the seat. I bought it because of my wrist pain. Carpal tunnel, who knows? I've seen three doctors, each with a different diagnosis. It was taking the fun out of my 19-lb. TREK 5200 carbon fiber wedgie. Yeah, it climbs well, but I'm selling it for half price. (It's a 58cm; Email me!) I enjoy my recumbent much more, and I am faster. At the end of a 100-mile century ride I am more comfortable now than I was after five miles on a wedgie.
The view Admit it, on your wedgie you see a lot of the road. Yellow stripes, black pavement: white stripes, gray pavement, sound familiar? On a recumbent the "default position" is looking at the horizon. Clouds, trees, cows, cars pulling out in front of me, this is what I see now. I don't find as many tools on the side of the road now, but I am having fun!
Speed Yes, on all but the est corners and steepest climbs a recumbent is probably faster than a wedgie with similarly conditioned rider. I think this is mostly due to the aerodynamic position of the rider. A rider reclined on a recumbent has even less frontal area than a triathlete scrunched over their handlebars. Recumbents have held most speed records for years, and would have for decades if they hadn't been outlawed for racing in 1934, when a "second rate" racer broke the prestigious hour record in France. (see recumbent history page) The current record for a recumbent, with full fairing, on level ground, with no drafting and no wind is 68 MPH. Try that on a wedgie!
Fun! I'll admit it; fun is a big reason I ride a bike. Yes, I ride for transportation and exercise, but it's the fun of it that gets me up and out in the morning. My recumbent is the most fun I've ever had on pavement.
We carry BikeE, RANS, Vision, ReBike and Trek recumbents. Come for a visit and test-ride several. We are here to help you find the bike that best suites you, and your budget! If you don't have a dealer in your area we can ship some recumbent brands to you. When we ship a new recumbent to a customer, we first unpack it, assemble it and adjust it. Then we ride it, re-adjust it and re-pack it. We don't just slap your address on a box and let it go.
